The National Center for Atmospheric Research is seeking a Postgraduate Scientist to conduct interdisciplinary
research projects in the area of cities and climate change.The scientist will join a multidisciplinary team
of researchers in NCAR's Science and Applications Program, Integrated Science Program.

This is a full time position with the NCAR´s Climate Science and Applications Program (CSAP). The incumbent
will provide general supportfor all activities related to the RESUCCCITIES initiative on cities and climate change. 
These activities include:

a) assisting in the theoretical design of studies on the relation between societal drivers
    and urban atmospheric emissions;
b) compiling data sets of societal and environmental determinants of urban GHG emissions, 
    impacts and vulnerabilities;
c) organizing comparative studies of cities adaptation and mitigation responses. The postgraduate will assist 
   and participate in the design of regression models, meta-analysis and other analytic tools.

General Introduction

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) is the national institute for weather,

climate research and seismology. It disseminates weather information to the public at

large, the government, aviation and the shipping industry in the interest of safety, the

economy and a sustainable environment. To gain insight into long-term developments,

KNMI conducts research on climate change. One of the spearheads in this research is the

development of EC-Earth, an Earth System Model, which is undertaken together with

several other European partners.

The department of Climate Observations contributes to research and monitoring of

the Earth system by utilising satellites. The activities of the department focus on the

quality and availability of satellite observations of essential atmospheric quantities,

particularly for climate research. Other areas of interest are air quality and stratospheric

ozone.

Vacancy description

The satellite instrument TROPOMI is currently being developed by industrial parties for

launch in 2014 on board of the European GMES Sentinel-5 Precursor satellite. KNMI has

the scientific lead for the TROPOMI instrument and fulfils the role of Principal Investigator

(PI) institute for this international mission.

The Scientist Satellite Remote Sensing will play a leading role in the definition and

development of the TROPOMI algorithms for the trace gas, aerosol and cloud data

products. He/she will provide guidance to a team of 3-4 experts in the field of algorithm

development, and is responsible for the development of the operational TROPOMI

software. In addition to the development of new algorithms, this team also maintains and

improves existing algorithms for OMI. The OMI and TROPOMI data products are used for

scientific research and monitoring of climate and air quality.

Requirements

PhD in physics, meteorology or a related field.

Experience with algorithm development, preferably in satellite remote sensing.

Up-to-date knowledge of the atmospheric sciences.

Experience with scientific data processing, knowledge of C and Fortran.

Motivator and inspirator to other people.

Good communication skills.

Fluent in English.

                                                       Post Doctorate RA B - Cloud-Aerosol Modeler at PNNL 
Job Description 
The Atmospheric Chemistry and Meteorology Group of the Atmospheric Sciences and Global Change Division seeks  
a Post Doctoral Researcher to actively participate in research involving the role of aerosols on maritime clouds.  
The group is actively involved in the development of the WRF-Chem regional meteorology-chemistry-aerosol model  
and has multi-year funding to pursue investigation of interactions between aerosols, clouds, and the background meteorology  
for the VOCALS field campaign, which took place during Fall 2008 off the coast of Chile.  The successful candidate will employ
 the WRF-Chem model to investigate the impact of emissions on maritime cloud development  for scales ranging from climate 
model to cloud-resolving resolutions. Our group also interacts with other leading climate science  activities nationally 
and internationally and this position can lead to high visibility and leadership in the research community. 
The successful candidate will be expected to: 
- Conduct technical research on aerosol-cloud interactions within the context of VOCALS 
- Publish research results in highly visible, peer-reviewed venues (conferences & journals) 
- Interact with internal and external research staff and domain scientists for collaboration purposes 
- Participate and make presentations on their work Minimum Requirements Candidates must have received a PhD 
in Atmospheric Science, Chemistry, Physics, or related field within the past five years  from an accredited college or university.

                                                3-year Post-Doc position at the Joint Research Centre (Ispra, Italy)

      "Climate modelling of energy and land-use scenarios in Global Climate Models"  In the context of the project, 
the objective is to evaluate energy and land-use scenarios on climate using the GCM-ECHAM5-HAM model. 
The candidate will collect and analyze various energy and land-use  scenarios, run equilibrium and transient simulations 
using ECHAM, and calculate the resulting changes in aerosol and radiative forcing. Results will have to be published 
in scientific articles. The ideal candidate should have a PhD in natural science, with preference in environmental science 
or meteorology (or a University degree in environmental science, meteorology or physics and 5 years of research

Post-Doctoral Researcher-OH Radicals and Sulfur Gases in the Coastal Atmosphere at the National University of Ireland Galway

 

The Centre for Climate & Air Pollution Studies (C-CAPS) in NUI Galway’s Environmental Change Institute focuses on the impact of atmospheric composition on climate change and air pollution. Research activities include aerosol formation and transformation, aerosol-cloud-climate interactions, atmospheric chemistry, air-sea exchange of aerosols and gases, air-quality and health, ocean acidification, ocean dynamics and climate change. Researchers at C-CAPS are involved in remote sensing of aerosols and clouds, aerosol and gas air-sea flux measurements, in-situ observations, process modelling and regional (ocean-atmosphere) climate and air quality modelling. Large scale facilities include the GAW/EMEP supersite Mace Head and a wide range of state of the art equipment.

This particular research focuses on long-term studies of the atmospheric oxidation efficiency and its relation to particle nucleation and growth as part of a four year project funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI): Variation of the Oxidation Efficiency and Particle Precursor Gases in the Coastal Atmosphere. The researcher will conduct measurements of atmospheric OH radicals and sulfur gases (H2SO4, MSA) using a chemical ionization mass spectrometer (CIMS). The measurement programme will be conducted during selected periods at the Mace Head Atmospheric Research Station, about 80 km from Galway on the Atlantic coast. Contributing partners in the project will be the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), USA, and Research Center Juelich (FZJ), Germany. Further responsibilities will include training and supervision of a PhD student, overall management of the measurements, data evaluation using a regional atmospheric chemistry model (RACM), close collaboration with NCAR and FZJ teams, further extension of measurements to other free radicals and/or trace gases. The research post is funded for 19 months.

Requirements:

A PhD degree in Atmospheric Physics, Chemistry, Meteorology, or related discipline is required. We seek an individual with, in order of priority, experience in atmospheric mass spectrometry, or measurements and modelling of atmospheric trace gases. Knowledge of chemical ionization mass spectrometry and atmospheric chemistry modelling would be desirable.

Starting Salary: €40,578 Start date: January 2010 (or earliest possibility thereafter)

PhD Opportunity in Atmospheric / Air Quality Research at the National University of Ireland Galway

 

Seasonal and long-term changes in the self-cleaning capacity of the atmosphere will be investigated as part of a 4-year SFI funded project starting in October 2009. I am looking for a PhD graduate student for this project having a general interest in climate change and air quality, with a physics, chemistry, meteorology, or environmental science background. The student should have a strong motivation to conduct experimental as well as data modelling research. Under my supervision and that of a postdoctorate researcher the student will measure important atmospheric trace gases (OH radical, H2SO4, MSA) at our Mace Head Atmospheric Research station using a worldwide unique mass spectrometer system (based on chemical ionization MS). You will work right at the forefront of one of the most exciting topics in current atmospheric research, learn a highly sensitive analytical technique with numerous interdisciplinary application potentials, and significantly improve your data modelling skills. Contributing partners in this project are the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, USA, and the Research Center Juelich in Germany.  Vacant Post-doc position as Research Associate in Atmospheric Physics and Chemistry at the Laboratory of Physical Meteorology (LaMP)
 
The Laboratory of Physical Meteorology (LaMP) has a long-standing experience in experimental and modelling studies of clouds and their interactions. It has developed experimental strategies to characterise the microphysical composition of clouds (Gayet et al. 2005) and the properties of aerosol particles and especially their ability to form clouds (Laj et al., 2005). From this knowledge, cloud models have been developed to describe at different scales the interaction of particles in the life cycle of clouds and precipitation.
 
The position is related to the BIOCLOUDS (Biological aerosol particles in the atmosphere and their impact on clouds) project which aims at investigating and quantifying the role of biological particles in tropospheric clouds. Six project partners will combine their expertise in microbiology, aerosol-cloud microphysics, meteorology, and cloud modelling to assess more accurately the potential importance of processes involving bacteria, yeasts, fungi, pollen and plant debris in cloud evolution.
 
The successful candidate will be in charge of determining the potential of biological particles to form cloud droplets (CCN properties). The experimental work will ally laboratory studies and field campaigns. The candidate will closely collaborate with the experimental group (a large set of instruments for the characterisation of the physico-chemical aerosol properties (filter and impactor, chemistry, size distribution, hygroscopicity..) are available), as well as with our modelling team and the other project partners.
 
The ideal candidate has a PhD in natural sciences with a solid background in chemistry and/or physics. A strong interest in atmospheric processes and specific knowledge in the area of aerosol science is advantageous. General experience in experimental work, the operation of instrumental equipment, and data processing is needed. The candidate should be motivated to conduct field studies and cooperate in a multidisciplinary team.

Post-doctoral position at the Department of Geophysics, Universidad de Chile (DGF).

We are looking for candidates interested in any of the research areas we work with at DGF. We would like to reclute an enthusiastic, independent but collaborative young researcher interested in aerosol-cloud interactions over the South East Pacific or in South American Mega-cities. The former theme will be developed around the VOCALS REx campaign (http://www.eol.ucar.edu/projects/vocals/) that took recently place over Northern Chile and Southern Peru (The emphasis being put -most likely- on sulfur aerosols associated with natural -oceanic/volcanic- and anthropogenic sources). The latter will be connected to the project South American Emissions Mega-cities and Climate (SAEMC, http://saemc.cmm.uchile.cl/), with emphasis on the development of past-present and future climate scenarios (including atm. chemistry) or chemical weather.

 Post Doctoral Position in Satellite Remote Sensing System Design.
 
There is an immediate opening at the University of Waterloo for a person with experience in remote sensing and atmospheric radiative transfer to participate in the design and instrument modelling phases of a proposed satellite-based atmospheric remote sensing mission. In collaboration with a private sector partner, the project proposes to develop a novel system to measure greenhouse gases and air pollutants in the lower troposphere.
The successful applicant will lead the development of an end-to-end model of the proposed instrument that will be used to determine accurately its expected performance specifications. Working with the private sector partner and other team members at the University of Waterloo, the successful applicant will also advise on the design and development of the instrument and evaluate the design as it evolves. The position is funded for one year, renewable, pending successful completion of the initial design and its acceptance for further study and/or launch.

En el marco del Convenio de Cooperación suscrito entre el CONICET y la OEA nos complace anunciar la convocatoria para becas postdoctorales en Argentina.

Las becas se otorgarán a estudiantes ciudadanos de los Estados Miembros de la OEA (excluyendo Argentina) y tendrán una duración mínima de doce (12) meses y máxima de veinticuatro (24) meses, no renovables y están destinadas a candidatos que hayan finalizado su formación doctoral.

Para ser considerados para una beca CONICET/OEA, los candidatos deberán:
a) Ser ciudadanos o residentes permanentes legales de un Estado Miembro de la OEA con excepción de Argentina.
b) Haber finalizado su formación doctoral.
c) Estar en buen estado de salud que les permita completar sus programas de estudio.
d) Dominar el idioma español.
