SAEMC Meeting 2009


The event will entitled "2nd Colombian Congress and International Conference on Air Quality and Public Health" and will be held on 14-17 July 2009 at the Cartagena Convention Center of Cartagena, Colombia.


The international guests includes:

- Arthur Winer (University of California)
- Tami Bond (University of Illinois)
- Clara Irazabal (Columbia University)
- Dr. Mauricio Osses (Chile)

Topics to be covered are related to emission inventories, measurement and modeling of air quality, public health implications of the pollution, and public policy to improve the air quality in cities.

National Action Plan on Climate Change for Chile

 The President of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, announced the National Action Plan on Climate Change (2008-2012), an initiative which constitutes the framework for the assessment of impacts, vulnerability and adaptation to climate change, and mitigation of emissions of greenhouse gases in the country, "is a reality that we are coming, it will have significant impact and there is no room for passivity," said the president.

The initiative announced by the Head of State, together with the Minister of Environment, Ana Lya Uriarte will address the impacts of climate change in areas such as health, water resources and biodiversity, and in various sectors such as agriculture, mining, generation energy, infrastructure and transport.

Air quality forecast: now operational at DMC

A big effort has been developed at the Oficina de Modelamiento y Desarrollo (Modeling and Development Office) of Dirección Meteorológica de Chile (Chilean Weather Service, DMC) in order to provide the basis for the chemical weather forecast and these efforts start to show results: the service is now offering air quality forecast as an operational product on its website: http://www.meteochile.cl/modelos.html

The modeling efforts have been carried out using the MM5 model for meteorological fields and the Polyphemus platform for the chemical weather forecast. In this work the SAEMC team at DMC have been the main developer of these application.
